Love Your Bodd

New Episodes every other Thursday! Love Your Bodd, hosted by Heather Boddy, is a podcast focused on creating a dialogue around body image. The podcast was on hiatus from mid 2019 - mid 2022. Heather's philosophies and priorities shifted while doing Love Your Bodd so if you're new here, please start with the 2022 "Start Here" Episode! We all have insecurities. You are not alone in your struggles. In Love Your Bodd, Heather Boddy sits down with artists, activists, health & fitness professionals and more, to discuss body image and how our insecurities make us who we are. The lack of representation in the arts and media is overwhelming. It's time to hold up a mirror to society and talk about how it can affect us. It's also time to hold a mirror up to ourselves and truly love that person we see staring back at us. Do you love your bodd?

This week on Love Your Bodd, Heather has a very intimate and candid interview with her “Big Baby Sister,” Hallie. Called so because she is so much taller than her older sister. These girls who were raised in the midwest and moved to opposite coasts - Hallie to California (LA) and Heather to NYC - discuss their upbringing and how their lifestyles changed moving to different cities. Together, Heather and Hallie talk about comments from family members on their body/weight, the problems with the “plus sized section,” Hallie growing up a “Tomboy," her sexuality, TACO BELL, and so much more.

Welcome back, Lovers!

This week on Love Your Bodd, we are focusing on Forgiving Yourself for gaining weight.

It can happen for a plethora of reasons, and it's time to examine how you react to it, because we can be very unkind to ourselves when this happens.

5 ways to stop beating yourself up for gaining weight:

1 & 2: Examine your "whys"

3. Gratitude

4. Become a scientist

5. Forgive yourself

All points go into more detail in the episode.

Heather was OUT IN THOSE SAN DIEGO STREETS finding cosplayers to interview for this special San Diego Comic Con edition of Love Your Bodd!

The group of people rallied up for this episode includes: a drag Poison Ivy, two She Hulks, a cosplay FAMILY, a curvy self-made DnD cosplay, a burlesque dancer who doubles as Psyloche, an all-to-accurate Harley Quinn, AND the perspective of a cosplayer who has Spina bifita - she dishes on all of the ins-and-outs of cosplay/comic con in a wheelchair!

In this episode of Love Your Bodd, Heather reflects on her experiences traveling this week and reminds herself to take better care of her body in her future travels.

She talks about the importance of hydration, the normalcy of bloating, and ways that you can/should incorporate movement into your travels to keep blood flowing in dat bodd.

She ends by talking about some fun and inspiring experiences she had that started with a CIZE class on the beach, and ended in a fully choreographed dance at the reception of her friend's wedding. Life is incredible.

Hi Lovers! Megan Yelaney is BACK! YAY!! She's been on the podcast a couple times before - her first full episode is titled "Protect Your Mind" and in that interview we dive deep into her journey with exercise and becoming a health/fitness coach.

In THIS Episode, we discuss the many ways her life has changed since then by having clients "Ditch the Diet" and find ways to eat that work best for them. One way she has done that is through incorporating Intermittent Fasting - which we discuss in minor detail. See reference links for more info.

We also discuss the THREE most common - and also most costly mistakes that people make when they decide to take on a new lifestyle -

3 Costly Mistakes People Make When Trying to Create a "Healthy" Lifestyle:

1. GOING ALL IN RIGHT AWAY: Having an "all or nothing" mentality inevitably ends up making you feel like a failure after the smallest human mistakes. Baby steps are the way to go.

2. UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Things take longer than you think they will.

3. TRY TO GO IT ALONE: Accountability is KEY. Having others to help you out is not only awesome motivation but it also makes the process more FUN!

Welcome back, Lovers!

In today's episode of Love Your Bodd you are going to hear from a body positive personal trainer named Jenna! She's been a personal trainer for 11 years but it hasn't always been so "body positive."

Jenna has a unique story of gaining weight to improve her health - both mentally and physically. As a personal trainer, she felt she needed to maintain a certain look: flat stomach, no body fat, size zero. Luckily, her discovery of Body Positivity opened up her eyes to a whole new world and way of living. She went from a size zero, miserable, living off supplements with no energy to a size 14/16, intuitively eating and moving, improved energy, and happily/healthily enjoying life.

Let's listen to and explore her story together.

Here is a call to action to all fitness professionals: WHERE are my true Body Positive fitness pros at?! Give Heather and Jenna a shout out so they can add you to their arsenal of warriors promoting body positivity in the fitness industry. Moving because you love it, not as punishment. Taking the shame out of gym setting. Taking the need to track every single thing out of the equation. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

The organization F.I.T.4ALL (previous love your bodd guest) certainly stands for this. As does another previous Love Your Bodd guest, Shanna Tyler. Now that I'm thinking about it, many previous LYB guests are. Such as Megan Yelaney and Sam Darby! But we need more and we need to be connected!! Jenna and I need a network of Body Positive connections we can send people to all over the world!

HAPPY PRIDE EPISODE, LOVERS!

This episode comes in two parts:

Part I is clips/blurbs from Previous Love Your Bodd guests, Love Your Bodd listeners, & Host Heather's friends and family on what PRIDE means to them and why it's important. Starting with a history lesson on The Stonewall Uprising and moving into some diverse opinions on PRIDE.

In Part II, Heather was out at NYC Pride interviewing Pride-goers about their experiences. It's a true celebration of representation for LGBTQ+ individuals!

In a totally raw, unplanned episode, Heather shares her "appearance based" struggles and how she has had to look at them from a place of acceptance instead of something she has to "fix."

She also shares her biggest takeaways from the F.I.T.4ALL Fit Fest Panel on Body Positivity, Health at Every Size, and how they stay "F.I.T." by F.I.T4ALL standards.

And lastly, she shares her notes from Gabrielle Bernstein's talk at the PopSugar Playground event.

This week's Love Your Bodd Guest is Sam Darby! She's a Body Image & Food Freedom coach and personal trainer who has struggled with diets, exercise, and a "fear of becoming fat."  She teaches women how to break free from dieting, quit the self-hatred and live a life full of happiness and abundance without guilt and food obsession. Brilliant!

In this Episode we talk about everything from Sam's Anorexia, to her obsession with trying new diets and workout programs, and follow her journey into Health at Every Size and Food Freedom. Which she totally discovered on accident while looking for the next big program that was going to give her that "dream body." Little did she know her dream body was there all along!

Welcome back, Lovers! This week on Love Your Bodd, Heather interviews Brock J, a Cosplayer she met at New York Comic Con.

The first half of the episode focuses on cosplay and Brock’s upbringings in foster care. The second half of the episode dives DEEP into Brock’s fitness journey and his recovery experience after having his leg shattered in an accident.

Not only is he a cosplayer, he's also very into health & self-improvement. He has a deep connection to his body thanks to MMA and Yoga. His experience with yoga was transformative in helping him heal post-injury. He's also a competitive power lifter and a member of the US Coast Guard. Listen to hear all about his experiences and how they make him stronger every day!

Hello there, Lovers! This new episode of Love Your Bodd is focused on helping you get over those feelings of being overwhelmed. In life, in your job, in your relationship ... whatever it is you are going through, you can get through it! Here are the tips:

  1. Brain Dump! Get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper - dump it out! Then organize it, prioritize it, and schedule it!
  2. Take a deep breath, focus on breathing and being in the moment.
  3. Delegate what you can. Outsource.
  4. Get an accountability buddy!
  5. TAKE ACTION!
  6. LET GO OF PERFECTION.

Failure is always an option. Not that you should focus on failure - please don't focus on failure - just know that it's always a possibility. You can set yourself up for success, but you can never be prepared for every bad thing that could happen.

In today's episode, Heather reflects on an overwhelming feeling of loneliness & sadness that struck her this weekend. She could narrow the feeling down to several things but she wants to talk to you all ... and herself ... about how these feelings are normal. Feel the thing. Move on. Practice Gratitude. Let Go.

"I think I just wanted people to see that I was in pain. I couldn't say that. I couldn't say, 'Hi, I'm Becky, I'm in pain. This is me being thinner than I should be so this is what pain means to me.'"

- Becky S

This week on Love Your Bodd we explore the importance of reaching out when you are in pain. Verbalizing your feelings can be incredibly difficult and can manifest in your mental health in all sorts of negative ways. For Becky, her inability to verbalize her pain led to an eating disorder. This week's guest Becky is incredibly open about her struggles with Anorexia, Exercise Addiction, Recovery, and most recently Bodybuilding. Listen to hear her talk about the winding road that is recovery and how lifting weights has both helped her recover but on the flip side, how competing in her first ever bikini competition brought back some of her disordered thinking.

**Trigger Warning** This episode can be potentially triggering for anyone who is struggling with an eating disorder, has struggled with one in the past, or who is in recovery. See below (Born This Way Links) for helpful resources.

"I felt like jumping on the rooftops & going 'okay, wait a minute, there's stuff we can do! We don't need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars at a fertility clinic, we can step back here, listen to what your body is saying, and make major change!'" - Sarah Clark, Fertility, Lifestyle, & Health Coach

This week's guest is an intelligent woman who specializes in fertility. If you are up for having your mind blown, tune in. In this episode, Heather and Sarah dig deep about a mind-body connection and all the effects that NOT listening to your body can have on you. What you eat, how you feel, your physical health, mental health, environmental stressors, genes, etc are ALL connected and can have a major impact on the way you live. These things can also affect fertility which is why Sarah's practice focuses so much on the mind-body connection when it comes to your ability to reproduce.

Sarah was in her mid twenties when she discovered she had Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) but she didn't let that deter her from having her first child via (IVF) In-vitro Fertilization. She was sick all the time, spending way to much money, and suppressed her feelings of not being able to conceive naturally. After much hard work, she was able to have success with IVF of her second child but she still hadn't taken her health into her own hands. Both of her children have food intolerances that, in theory, may have been preventable if she had taken better care of her body and listened to the way it was whispering to her.

Fast forward to Sarah in her 40s, newly awoken after taking a life coaching course - which led her to take a health coaching course - where she discovered all of her own food sensitivities. She thought about how this may have affected her ability to conceive and that curiosity led to her practices as a Fertility Coach today, and her "Get Pregnant Naturally" podcast, where she helps women do just that - get pregnant naturally.

Some things we talk about that may need noting:

H Pylori - a stomach bacteria that, when dormant is perfectly fine, but when found in excess, can lead to stomach cancer.

Endometriosis - when an abnormal tissue grows outside the lining of the uterus.

Celiac Disease - An immune reaction to eating gluten (bloating/diarrhea)

Goal Weight. Let's talk about it. Pretty much everyone has one. That number in the back of your mind that you strive for every day. That number that you pray is on the scale every time you step on. Hoping each time to be closer. Maybe you are at your goal weight! Wow! Congratulations, you are one of the few! What would happen though, if you stepped on the scale and you weren't anymore?

In today's episode of Love Your Bodd, Heather explains why having a goal weight is actually depleting your happiness instead of giving you something motivational to work on. By the end of the episode, you will learn different ways to frame your health goals so that you aren't focused on the number on the scale.

Setpoint/Appestat:

  • The weight you maintain when you listen and respond to your body's signals of hunger and fullness.
  • The weight you maintain when you don't fixate on your weight or food habits.
  • The weight you keep returning to between diets.
(from Health at Every Size by Linda Bacon)

4 Ways Your Goal Weight is "Weighing You Down":

  1. Your weight is not an accurate measure of your physical health OR progress.
    • You cannot physically measure blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, any of the internal factors that are said to be caused by being "overweight" by stepping on a scale.
    • Muscle weighs more than fat!
      Image 1 -

Image 2 - real fat vs real muscle
  2. Gives You A Negative Relationship with your body.
    • Leads to regulation, guilt, binging
    • eat less, exercise more - no longer enjoy food or exercise
    • calorie restriction/meticulous calculation

  3. Negatively Affects on your Mental Health

  4. Negatively Affects your Happiness & Lifestyle Choices

What can we do to Change this?!

Make Motivationally Framed Goals that are NOT related to a number.

Productive, Positive, & Present!

"I am, I have, I will..."

What is the voice inside your head saying to you? Is it negative? If so, that's totally normal. Is it positive? That's normal, too!  On today's Love Your Bodd episode, Heather sits down with you solo to teach you about self-talk and the labels we place on the events that happen in our lives.

Self Talk Lesson this Episode:

Self-talk: The action or practice of talking to oneself, either externally (aloud) or internally (mentally).

Self-Talk is how people evaluate and respond to events in their lives. It is typical for most people to feel some things are good (staying on a meal plan, adhering to an exercise program, winning a league championship), while others things are viewed as bad (going off a meal plan, stopping an exercise regimen, losing a league championship game). But in reality, events are simply events. It is the evaluation of events that make them positive or negative, and this in turn determines one’s emotional, mental, and physical responses to the events. In fact, sometimes things that were initially evaluated as bad eventually turned out to be good.

Types of Self Talk:

  1. Motivational self-talk: The act of practicing self-talk in a positive manner, focusing on increasing energy, effort, and positive attitude.
  2. Instructional self-talk: The act of practicing self-talk in which an individual focuses on the technical or taskrelated aspects of performance in order to improve execution.
  3. Negative self-talk: The act of practicing self-talk in a negative manner focusing on critical and self-demeaning statements that negatively affects goal attainment.

Ways to Focus on Motivational Self-Talk

  1. Take away the labels. There is no "good" or "bad" or "positive" or "negative."
  2. Practice Gratitude.
  3. Create Confidence / Gain knowledge.
  4. Practice Mantras! "Keep your phrases short and specific, use the first person and present tense, construct positive phrases, say your phrases with meaning and attention, speak kindly to yourself, repeat phrases often." (- From AFAA Mental Toughness textbook, Ch. 1)
  5. Create Routines & Systems to create control & help with decision making.
(P.S. Here's the Obama article about his routine - https://www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2012/sep/17/barack-obama-secret-weapon-routine)

I'd like to give credit in this episode to AFAA & the Mental Toughness course I am currently completing, which inspired me to share the self-talk info.

I would also like to credit Chalene Johnson and her lessons in the 131 Method, which give me confidence daily when it comes to food freedom, confidence, and motivating self talk surrounding food.

Welcome to Part 2 of the Girls in Capes interview! Please, if you haven't already, go listen to Part 1 first, where you will learn all about Girls in Capes and the ladies involved in the panel!

In Part II of this 2 part interview, we discuss PROBLEMATIC MEDIA! Problematic favorites as in problematic creators, problematic FANDOMS, and problematic content. What makes something problematic? Why do we, as consumers of media, continue to support works that are problematic? What can we do to change the problematic media that is popular today?!

Listen to us discuss OUR problematic favorites as well as flip everything in the opposite direction to works that are more inclusive! Like last week, the moral we want you to take away from this episode is that money talks. Throw your money at the types of stories you want to hear whether it be movies, books, television, what have you! Spend your dollars where they are going to count. Media outlets will recognize this and start creating more diverse works!

This week on Love Your Bodd, Heather sits down with the Founder of the online publication "Girls in Capes," along with several ladies of the writing team, to talk about representation in geek culture!

In Part I of this 2 part interview, we discuss "Girls in Capes" and why is it so important today. We also talk about how media influences us from a young age and how that carries over into our adult life/personality. The goal of the discussion is to take a closer look at the way we consume media compared to ways we can support works that are more inclusive. Part 2 takes it much deeper with discussions on problematic favorites and what makes them so "problematic." But you'll have to wait until next week for that!

One moral we want you to take away from this episode is that money talks. Throw your money at the types of stories you want to hear whether it be movies, books, television, what have you! Spend your dollars where they are going to count. Media outlets will recognize this and start creating more diverse works!

Does your career rely heavily on what you look like? For most dancers and models, body image can be a huge issue.

In this episode of Love Your Bodd, Heather talks to an old friend, Rachel Eten, about what it was like to grow up as a dancer and later, what it's like to have a professional modeling career. Luckily, Rachel has been able to stay sane and keep control over her own body in industries where it is common to feel like other people have control over it.

Rachel shares the weird ins-and-outs of modeling; she shares how exercise has never been her thing (she even shares her own fun term for "exercise"); and lastly, we talk about her pregnancy, motherhood, and how she feels an intense pressure to get her pre-pregnancy body back - not from the industry but from herself.
