Love Your Bodd

New Episodes every other Thursday! Love Your Bodd, hosted by Heather Boddy, is a podcast focused on creating a dialogue around body image. The podcast was on hiatus from mid 2019 - mid 2022. Heather's philosophies and priorities shifted while doing Love Your Bodd so if you're new here, please start with the 2022 "Start Here" Episode! We all have insecurities. You are not alone in your struggles. In Love Your Bodd, Heather Boddy sits down with artists, activists, health & fitness professionals and more, to discuss body image and how our insecurities make us who we are. The lack of representation in the arts and media is overwhelming. It's time to hold up a mirror to society and talk about how it can affect us. It's also time to hold a mirror up to ourselves and truly love that person we see staring back at us. Do you love your bodd?

Goal Weight. Let's talk about it. Pretty much everyone has one. That number in the back of your mind that you strive for every day. That number that you pray is on the scale every time you step on. Hoping each time to be closer. Maybe you are at your goal weight! Wow! Congratulations, you are one of the few! What would happen though, if you stepped on the scale and you weren't anymore?

In today's episode of Love Your Bodd, Heather explains why having a goal weight is actually depleting your happiness instead of giving you something motivational to work on. By the end of the episode, you will learn different ways to frame your health goals so that you aren't focused on the number on the scale.

Setpoint/Appestat:

  • The weight you maintain when you listen and respond to your body's signals of hunger and fullness.
  • The weight you maintain when you don't fixate on your weight or food habits.
  • The weight you keep returning to between diets.
(from Health at Every Size by Linda Bacon)

4 Ways Your Goal Weight is "Weighing You Down":

  1. Your weight is not an accurate measure of your physical health OR progress.
    • You cannot physically measure blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, any of the internal factors that are said to be caused by being "overweight" by stepping on a scale.
    • Muscle weighs more than fat!
      Image 1 -

Image 2 - real fat vs real muscle
  2. Gives You A Negative Relationship with your body.
    • Leads to regulation, guilt, binging
    • eat less, exercise more - no longer enjoy food or exercise
    • calorie restriction/meticulous calculation

  3. Negatively Affects on your Mental Health

  4. Negatively Affects your Happiness & Lifestyle Choices

What can we do to Change this?!

Make Motivationally Framed Goals that are NOT related to a number.

Productive, Positive, & Present!

"I am, I have, I will..."

"Change your thoughts and you can change your world." - Norman Vincent Peale

"We are not disturbed by things, but rather the view we take of them." - Epiuctetus

"There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so." - Shakespeare

What is the voice inside your head saying to you? Is it negative? If so, that's totally normal. Is it positive? That's normal, too!  On today's Love Your Bodd episode, Heather sits down with you solo to teach you about self-talk and the labels we place on the events that happen in our lives.

Self Talk Lesson this Episode:

Self-talk: The action or practice of talking to oneself, either externally (aloud) or internally (mentally).

Self-Talk is how people evaluate and respond to events in their lives. It is typical for most people to feel some things are good (staying on a meal plan, adhering to an exercise program, winning a league championship), while others things are viewed as bad (going off a meal plan, stopping an exercise regimen, losing a league championship game). But in reality, events are simply events. It is the evaluation of events that make them positive or negative, and this in turn determines one’s emotional, mental, and physical responses to the events. In fact, sometimes things that were initially evaluated as bad eventually turned out to be good.

Types of Self Talk:

  1. Motivational self-talk: The act of practicing self-talk in a positive manner, focusing on increasing energy, effort, and positive attitude.
  2. Instructional self-talk: The act of practicing self-talk in which an individual focuses on the technical or taskrelated aspects of performance in order to improve execution.
  3. Negative self-talk: The act of practicing self-talk in a negative manner focusing on critical and self-demeaning statements that negatively affects goal attainment.

Ways to Focus on Motivational Self-Talk

  1. Take away the labels. There is no "good" or "bad" or "positive" or "negative."
  2. Practice Gratitude.
  3. Create Confidence / Gain knowledge.
  4. Practice Mantras! "Keep your phrases short and specific, use the first person and present tense, construct positive phrases, say your phrases with meaning and attention, speak kindly to yourself, repeat phrases often." (- From AFAA Mental Toughness textbook, Ch. 1)
  5. Create Routines & Systems to create control & help with decision making.
(P.S. Here's the Obama article about his routine - https://www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2012/sep/17/barack-obama-secret-weapon-routine)

I'd like to give credit in this episode to AFAA & the Mental Toughness course I am currently completing, which inspired me to share the self-talk info.

I would also like to credit Chalene Johnson and her lessons in the 131 Method, which give me confidence daily when it comes to food freedom, confidence, and motivating self talk surrounding food.

Welcome to Part 2 of the Girls in Capes interview! Please, if you haven't already, go listen to Part 1 first, where you will learn all about Girls in Capes and the ladies involved in the panel!

In Part II of this 2 part interview, we discuss PROBLEMATIC MEDIA! Problematic favorites as in problematic creators, problematic FANDOMS, and problematic content. What makes something problematic? Why do we, as consumers of media, continue to support works that are problematic? What can we do to change the problematic media that is popular today?!

Listen to us discuss OUR problematic favorites as well as flip everything in the opposite direction to works that are more inclusive! Like last week, the moral we want you to take away from this episode is that money talks. Throw your money at the types of stories you want to hear whether it be movies, books, television, what have you! Spend your dollars where they are going to count. Media outlets will recognize this and start creating more diverse works!

This week on Love Your Bodd, Heather sits down with the Founder of the online publication "Girls in Capes," along with several ladies of the writing team, to talk about representation in geek culture!

In Part I of this 2 part interview, we discuss "Girls in Capes" and why is it so important today. We also talk about how media influences us from a young age and how that carries over into our adult life/personality. The goal of the discussion is to take a closer look at the way we consume media compared to ways we can support works that are more inclusive. Part 2 takes it much deeper with discussions on problematic favorites and what makes them so "problematic." But you'll have to wait until next week for that!

One moral we want you to take away from this episode is that money talks. Throw your money at the types of stories you want to hear whether it be movies, books, television, what have you! Spend your dollars where they are going to count. Media outlets will recognize this and start creating more diverse works!
